JUNETEENTH 2024!
13/06/2024 Duração: 54minJuneteenth is the national commemoration of the emancipation of enslaved African Americans after the Civil War. The very first commemoration was held in Texas on June 19, 1865. Another View celebrated this historic holiday on Thursday, June 13. Hampton Storytellers Jay Johnson and Sheila Arnold regaled us with stories about Juneteenth. Historian Harvey Bakari shared some little known Black history facts and we had a great time going live to the parking lot with our producer Lisa Godley to share in the party.

Blacks and Baseball

Is this behavior part of the reason why more and more African Americans are not playing America's pastime? We examine the relationship between the African American community and the game of baseball - and what can be done to get this community more interested and involved with the game. AV on Health: Hypertension and the Black Community
30/05/2024 Duração: 54minMore than half of Black adults in the United States suffer from hypertension, or high blood pressure. In fact, African Americans have a higher prevalence of hypertension than any other racial or ethnic group. There is a new study being conducted in Hampton Roads on the best ways to control high blood pressure. Sentara Health is partnering with ten Black churches to develop strategies and programs to fight this condition that is a major cause of stroke, heart attacks, and early death. Our guests include Iris Lundy, Director of Health Equity with Sentara Health; Reverend Jerry Holmes, Pastor, First Baptist Church, Bute Street; and Dr. Keith Newby, Cardiologist and Co-Host of Another View on Health.

USS Kitty Hawk Race Riot
23/05/2024 Duração: 54minOne night in October, 1972, violent confrontations between Black and white sailors and marines happened aboard the USS Kitty Hawk while off the coast of North Vietnam. It was the culmination of the stress of the war and simmering racial tensions. For six hours, Black and whites clashed, yet the next day, only Black sailors were court-martialed and brought up on charges. We hear about what really happened on the ship, and how such one-sided injustice happened to 25 accused Black sailors. Our guests include Marv Truhe, author of Against All Tides, The Untold Story of the USS Kitty Hawk Race Riot; and Perry Pettus, who was assaulted by Marines during the incident. Truhe served as a Navy JAG lawyer and military judge during the Vietnam war and served as defense attorney for several of the Kitty Hawk defendants.

African American Motorcycle Clubs
16/05/2024 Duração: 54minIt's an impressive site - a beautiful, sunny day on the highway with a large group of motorcycle enthusiasts riding in formation - adult men and women enjoying the freedom of the road on their two or three-wheeler bikes. Many of these motorcycle clubs are African American with chapters nationwide. In Hampton Roads, clubs include Buffalo Soldiers, 7 Cities O'mens MC, Chesapeake Riders, Afro Dogs, and ThundernLightening Motorcycle Club to name a few. We hear from two cyclists about the joy of riding, safety issues, and hear stories of their adventures.

Critics, including some mainstream newspaper columnists, viewed the comment as racially and culturally insensitive. That's the formal definition of the drugs many are using now solely to lose weight. It's the latest in the weight loss war. Nearly 48% of African American adults in the US are clinically obese, and Black women are especially affected as 4 out of every 5 Black women are obese. Is GLP-1 the magic weight loss medicine as some claim? Is obesity a disease, or a lack of will power?
