The Endless Summer. You know the poster...you smoked pot to it for hours in college. This week, Beer & Tall Buildings went to Hollywood to hear the poster's creator, graphic artist John Van Hamersveld, wax poetic about the inevitability of each of us becoming our own app. And he showed a few pictures along the way. The event was hosted by rubix hollywood and photographer Dana Ross, and co-sponsored by LA Canvas Magazine and the Shiny Object Co.

Beer & Tall Buildings does a live remote from the inaugural Palm Springs Fine Art Fair, a surprisingly successful event that has been drawing the L.A. art world to the desert in droves all Presidents Day Weekend. We meet up with Art-merge's Jae Yang to discuss her curatorial role in the fair's two lounges, and to get an insiders perspective on this first-year event.  

  EPISODE 35: CHEECH MARIN Yesterday B&TB met Cheech Marin at Thomas Paul Fine Art, where he has been busy selecting from an exceptional cast of Chicano artists that he and the gallery will be presenting next week at the Palm Springs Fine Art Fair. Our conversation drifts from the definition of “Chicano” to the artists of New America who fit this definition, to a curiously common linguistic phenomenon called “code switching” which, if you listen further, you'll discover is a phenomenon that happens on a subconscious level all the time: in bilingual communication, in monolingual socio-cultural flag waving, and especially, as Cheech explains, in the work of the Chicano artists for whom he advocates.

This week, Beer & Tall Buildings speaks with noted L.A. artist Jim Morphesis on the eve of his January 28th opening of new paintings at Garboushian Gallery in Beverly Hills. His face is already monumental among Angelinos: last November, an 84 Olympics-era mural by Kent Twitchell, which depicts Jim's visage was recently restored on the 101 Freeway. Now with the debut of roughly two dozen new pieces, we figured it was time to catch up with Morphesis to discuss his own work. EPISODE 32: FINE OR FUNCTION? As the city comes together for art fairs, we head over to the LA Art Show at the convention center to sit in on the Fabrik Magazine sponsored panel "The Inter-Influence of Art and Design", moderated by Peter Frank and featuring panelists: Interior Designer Linda Allen; Director at the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art Rex Bruce; artist Brad Howe; Designer and Founder of Twentieth Stefan Lawrence; and Art Consultant Leonardo Ledesma. Here at Beer & Tall Buildings, we've always envisioned design as "that which answers a question," and art as "that which asks a question," but after this installment of the fair's extensive symposia series, we find that the lines can't be so distinctly drawn...if they can even be drawn at all.
