E58: Mercier Orchards, Georgia Craft Brewers Guild and Nuit Belge
04/02/2017 Duração: 51minA busy week! Not only is there some important football game going on this Sunday (#RISEUP), we invited a veritable plethora of guests on the show. Nancy Palmer of the Georgia Craft Brewer's Guild joined us on the exciting news about SB 85 - a bill that would actually (*gasp*) allow brewers to sell beer (wait for it...) at the brewery! Regardless, this is great news for Georgia's beer community. This bill, a compromise between the Guild and distributors, would allow: Breweries to sell up to 3,000 barrels of beer made on premises, by the glass and up to one case per customer. Read more details here. In studio? We had a little change of pace. Tony Jones and Ian Flom from Mercier Orchards took a trip down from Blue Ridge to talk all things cider. We were able to talk about the history of Mercier Orchards and cider, as well as the process for making it. Also, we talked to Matt Leff of Nuit Belge. E57: ACAT with New Realm, Variant Brewing, and Good Word Brewing
28/01/2017 Duração: 01h05minWhat an amazing event! If you haven't been to one of the 13 iterations of the Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting, then you're missing out. Owen Ogletree, owner of Brewtopia.com, puts on the event every year at the Prado in Sandy Springs. This year's version featured more than 60 casks of unique and creative beers from Georgia, national and international brewers! We took advantage of our attendance at ACAT to drink some amazing beers (of course), but also to get updates on a few breweries and brewpubs in planning. First on the list was Mitch Steele. The former brewmaster for Stone Brewing is working with his partners to open up a brewpub on the Atlanta beltline sometime late in 2017. We spoke with him about the plans, and the reason why they picked Atlanta. Next, Owen took some time out of his busy day to talk about casks. What they are, the history involved, and why they are so much more nuanced than "normal" tapped beers. In our third segment, we speak to Matt and Lauren Curling, the husb

We also talked about Georgia Beer Day, the growth of craft beer (and spirits) in Kennesaw, as well as the fist BHB Town Hall meeting this week. Finally, Tim tests Scott on music and beer pairings. You'll find out what the best beer is for listening to Taylor Swift, natch. Also joining us was Morgan and Lisa Maclellan, the owners of Your Pie Perimeter. E44: Arches Brewing Loves Lagers
29/10/2016 Duração: 47minIt takes some courage to open up a craft brewery focusing mainly on lagers. After all, lagers require a little more love...time...and temperature control before they're ready to serve. And for the most part, craft beer drinkers are mainly an ale-centric bunch. But for the men behind Hapeville's Arches Brewing, craft lagers are a way to showcase their brewing skills. Ryan Fogelgren and Jamey Adams joined us in the studios this week. Specializing in crisp, clean-drinking (mainly) German-style beers, the crew behind Arches have gained a good following in the community, and have even gained fans at the nearby Porsche headquarters. We talked about their start in the brewing business, their growth, and the future. E43: Georgia Beer History with Rom Smith and Mary Boyle
22/10/2016 Duração: 49minA little history for you this week. Ron Smith and Mary O. Boyle are with us today. Not only are they craft beer fans, they are the authors of “Atlanta Beer: A Heady History of Brewing in the South” as well as “Prohibition in Atlanta: Temperance, Tiger Kings and White Lightning.” Atlanta and the south have had a love/hate relationship with alcohol over the past 250 or so years. From the Whitehall Tavern opening on the West End in 1835 (back when Atlanta was called Terminus), to the mayoral election of Moses Frumwalt (of the awesomely named "Free and Rowdy" party) over Jonathan Norcross (of the "Moral Party), the early years of the region were quite...interesting. Then, with the Civil War, reconstruction, and the abolitionist movement, the region underwent many, many changes. The opening of Atlantic Brewing in 1935 (it was located on the current site of the downtown Hilton) marked a turn in Atlanta's brewing history. After its closing in the 50s, Atlanta's only brewery was a branch

Terrapin Brew Lab coming to the Home of the Atlanta Braves
18/10/2016 Duração: 02minBeer, Baseball and Barbecue. What's more American than that? Not much, if you ask me. The new home for the Atlanta Braves is going up in Cobb County. It will not only feature the ballpark, but also a shopping and dining space called the Battery Atlanta. Some of the Atlanta stalwart restaurants that are planned for the Battery are Antico Pizza, Ford Fry's Superica, and the iconic BBQ joint Fox Brothers. Joining Fox Brothers in their venture? Terrapin Beer Company. Co-founder "Spike" Buckowski, and representatives from the Atlanta Braves were on hand at Fox Brothers to make the announcement. The tap room will not only feature Terrapin's regular and seasonal releases, but will also house a brand new pilot system that will allow Terrapin's brewers to experiment with new recipes on a smaller scale. We talked to Spike about this new venture. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! Your hosts are Tim Dennis and Brian Hewitt w
