Sinopse

This weekly podcast explores the intersection of running and mothering; it was launched in 2011 by the authors of RUN LIKE A MOTHER: HOW TO GET MOVING AND NOT LOSE YOUR FAMILY, JOB, OR SANITY. Host Sarah Bowen Shea, a mom of three and veteran of a dozen marathons, is joined by a rotating coterie of co-hosts and often a guest expert to discuss topics ranging from how to reach a big race goal to the value of a best running friend, and everything in between. Training, nutrition, motivation, mental toughness, TMI issues: These mother runners cover it all (and then some). This witty, conversational podcast makes a great running partner because these gals do all the talkingeven on the uphills!

  • #150: Everything You Need to Know to Tri

    28/02/2015 Duração: 01h01min

Thinking about trying a triathlon this spring or summer? Dimity and Sarah welcome triathlon coach Barrie Hufford to answer questions ranging from gear to training. As the mother of two young boys, Barrie recognizes most moms can’t dedicate four hours/day to the sport, and her realistic attitude shines through in her answers, such as telling gals not to do too much (e.g. no need to do a 40-mile bike ride now for a sprint triathlon in June). Bethany is chronicling her training triumphs and tribulations for AMR as part of Team Stonyfield. Like many AMR podcast guests of late, Bethany was a reluctant runner when she first started—as a way to process the pain of her father’s ordeal with prostate cancer—but 11 years later, she’s fully embracing this “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” You’re sure to laugh when she talks about how her testosterone-saturated house... With just a few weeks until the debut of Tales from Another Mother Runner, Dimity and Sarah welcome Alison Overholt, one of 20 mother runners who contributed an essay to the book. Alison, editor in chief of espnW, starts of by telling how--and why--she morphed from being a hoops player to a runner. Alison reads from her poignant TAMR essay, which deals with the death of her mother and the birth of her daughter. Then, taking the AMR game up a notch, she quotes Sheryl Sandberg's recent talk at Davos (fancy!), followed by lessons she learned about mother running from Kara Goucher. This prompts a conversation about "power words:" Alison's 2015 power word is... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Have no worries, Sarah and Dim will be back next week with a fresh episode!] Given the Arctic temps that have gripped Denver, it was only natural that Sarah and Dimity talk winter weather—and how to dress for exercising in it. Along the way the gals laugh over their experiences running in cold and slippery conditions; Sarah goes way back into her personal archives to talk about when she discovered her inner badass runner (when she was a long way from being a mother). And, finally, the ladies will tell you the connection between winter weather and waxing facial hair. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

  • #142: 2014 Race Reflections from Mother Runners

    27/12/2014 Duração: 01h27s

Even though this podcast starts out seeming like it should be called “Another Mother Swimmer,” eventually Sarah and Dimity turn to talking about running. After briefly recounting a few of their own 2014 races, the gals let other mother runners do the talking: more than a dozen women call in to share their most memorable race moments of the year. From first 10Ks, half-marathons, and marathons to encounters with a snake during a duathlon, the stories cover the gamut. While there are many laughs, you should have a box of tissues handy as many of the tales are moving. Along the way, Dimity and Sarah debate whether one gal pukes or poops roadside during a Ragnar Relay, and... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

  • #141: Returning to Running after Fever or Flu

    20/12/2014 Duração: 41min

A timely topic and, like a hearty chicken soup, it’s chock full of good things—namely advice from a family practitioner about when and how to resume running after an illness. Dimity and Sarah host Marni Nicholas, M.D., a mother runner of two school-age sons and doctor of internal medicine in New Hampshire. The good doctor starts by talking about how she practices what she preaches, leading a beginners’ 5K program in her community every spring. Once talk turns to tissues and thermometers, Dr. Marni delivers good news, which is that moderate exercise boosts immunity so a short, easy run can help chase a cold away. A fever, however, is another... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

  • #140: When and How to Hire a Coach

    13/12/2014 Duração: 59min

Coaches aren’t just for top-tier athletes: Dimity and Sarah are joined by two running coaches who talk about how a pro can get any runner or triathlete to her very best. First up: Angela Bekkala. This mother of twins and running coach in New Hampshire describes a coach as a neutral party who can help you discover your potential and prevent injury—two worthy goals in the mother runner playbook. She also talks about, “the power of trying,” and how a coach addresses the brain plus the body. Next, Briana Boehmer, the coach who guided Dimity to her Ironman success and Sarah to her recent Boston-qualifying marathon finish, describes how a coach makes good decisions for you and opens your eyes to what you can do. She sagely labels a... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

  • #138: Tips for Newbie--and Returning Injured—Runners (Repeat)

While Dimity and Sarah are galavanting around the East Coast, they are re-airing this podcast that originally aired in 2012. It seemed fitting, in part, because, alas, Dimity is back in a boot; in a few weeks, she'll be following the advice she shares about resuming running after an injury. Whether you, too, are coming back after some time off or you recently picked up running, you'll make good use of the loads of advice the mother runners dish. They talk about the importance of not comparing yourself to anyone else, incorporating walking breaks, focusing on distance not speed, and finding a running buddy. And the ladies tell you why they envy your fresh, only-just-begun slate. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Sarah and Dimity answer this question with the help of Larissa Rivers, a mother runner and marketing manage of running at Strava, our fave GPS/social media app. Larissa tells about the clever social media campaign Strava has launched to encourage folks to continue setting fitness goals for the waning weeks of 2014. After Larissa, the ladies answer (recorded) call-in questions from AMR tribemates, including how to deal with the inevitable post-race funk. They endorse Phoebe’s suggestion to focus on a different hobby, yet they are slightly divided on maintenance miles. Find out why... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Known also as the guy behind the Big Guy Blog for Runner’s World website, Ted has gone through numerous ups and downs with his weight, even while training for marathons and an Ironman triathlon. Ted talks about why it’s so important to value successes instead of focusing on mistakes, whether it’s in the pursuit of a race starting line or weight-loss goal. Find out why he thinks exercise and eating are exact opposites. The trio discusses chocolate chips and bond over Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

  • #135: Answers to Questions, Plus GORP on the Floor

    08/11/2014 Duração: 51min

Sarah and Dimity dive into questions posted by their Facebook community, serving up answers about how to hire a running or triathlon coach; the necessity of hill repeats (resulting in a new slang term, “The Dimity”); and how to return to running after an injury. The mother runners debate having a time goal for a debut marathon, which—news flash—isn’t simply twice a half-marathon, and whether losing weight is realistic for a faster finish time. And, don’t get up in arms, but the gals talk about arm swing while running. Find out first what household calamity Dimity has to deal with after recording the show. Check out the absolutely challenging Sarah’s coach has had her doing (very poorly, SBS admits). And, finally, here’s the promised link to AMR running retreat next April in Little Rock. Molly ran the half-marathon and, spoiler alert, Sarah re-qualified for Boston Marathon in time of 3:56:54!
