Sinopse

This weekly podcast explores the intersection of running and mothering; it was launched in 2011 by the authors of RUN LIKE A MOTHER: HOW TO GET MOVING AND NOT LOSE YOUR FAMILY, JOB, OR SANITY. Host Sarah Bowen Shea, a mom of three and veteran of a dozen marathons, is joined by a rotating coterie of co-hosts and often a guest expert to discuss topics ranging from how to reach a big race goal to the value of a best running friend, and everything in between. Training, nutrition, motivation, mental toughness, TMI issues: These mother runners cover it all (and then some). This witty, conversational podcast makes a great running partner because these gals do all the talkingeven on the uphills!

  • #129: Napa Valley Ragnar Relay

    27/09/2014 Duração: 58min

Fresh of running 205 miles (with 10 other bada** mother runners!), Dimity and Sarah tell the tale of their Ragnar Relay from San Francisco to Napa Valley. They are joined by a teammate from each of their vans, Kelly and Melissa. Kelly hits the nail on the head when she describes the 38-hour relay race as, "a sleepover with my best friends I'd never met before." During this hour-long podcast, find out what a Honeybucket is - and why Kelly played Candy Crush in one. Then learn why the gals in the team's second van quickly adopted the Minions' motto of, "I was born to be awesome, not perfect." And hear how Sarah's team saved her on a brutal 11.4 section mile of the race.  Also, if you haven't yet taken our quick mother runner survey, please follow this link to take it. At most it'll take 10 minutes of your time, and you can opt out of some questions... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

  • #128: The Importance of Rest

    20/09/2014 Duração: 32min

Sarah and Dimity talk about nothing—doing nothing, that is. Rest is a crucial part of an exercise program, whether it’s a rest day during a training plan; recovering properly after a race; not overdoing it on “easy” days; or getting enough sleep. The gals cover all these forms of rest as they crack each other up. This podcast also reveals such personal details about Dimity as her family dinner routine, her bedtime, and her astrological sign. This is a repeat podcast as the mother runners are running from San Francisco to Napa Valley in the Ragnar Relay. Oh, the irony of them talking about sleeping and resting when they’re coping about 2 hours of shut-eye in the past 24 hours! • #126: A Chat with Saucony 26Strong Cadets Mid-Training

    06/09/2014 Duração: 57min

In this almost hour-long episode, Dimity and Sarah introduce their “cadets” in the Saucony 26Strong program, Kelly Pollock and Alison Pellicci, respectively. Kelly and Alison are both relatively new runners—hitting the pavement (and treadmill!) for two years or less—and now they are midway through training to run their first 26.2, the Philadelphia Marathon, with Dimity and Sarah at their sides. The cadets tell how training is going, including sharing their biggest hurdle and greatest surprise thus far. Kelly talks about the success of doing run-walk pattern, and Alison lets listeners in on what it’s like to marathon train with her husband. Finally, each mother runner debates the all-important topic: race-day attire. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

  • #125: Heading into Fall Racing Season

    30/08/2014 Duração: 49min

Somewhat of a rarity: This podcast is just Dimity and Sarah gabbing. Their main topic of conversation is their two different approaches to the fall racing season: They are both doing the Philadelphia Marathon as part of the Saucony 26Strong (more on that program in next week’s show), but they are taking two different training routes to get to the City of Brotherly Love. Dimity talks about her varied cross-training plans—including a jump-rope circuit she schemed up—and Sarah shares a few tales about recent challenging runs. (Enthusiasm alert: SBS is buzzing off a serious runner’s high from a 19-mile doozy she ran a few hours before recording this podcast!) Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Sarah and Dimity engage in a conversation with Nancy Sherwood, Ph.D., who specializes in helping parents support healthy eating and activity patterns in kids, as well as promoting healthy body image in children. This mother runner of two reminds us to be patient with our kids: “It’s a waiting game until kids take up healthier strategies.” Nancy answers a bevy of questions culled from Facebook, including how to get kids to eat fewer carbs and more protein and how to teach them balance. The gals all debate how to lead kids to activity without pushing too hard.   Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

  • #123: Ultrarunning Mother—and Daughter

    16/08/2014 Duração: 52min

Buckle up: Dimity and Sarah cover a lot of ground in this podcast, starting with a half-marathon race recap by SBS, and some thoughts from Dimity about her rapidly approaching Pikes Peak Ascent. The ladies are joined by Pam Smith, M.D., a pathologist, mother of two, and kickass ultramarathoner. Pam has them hanging on every word as she tells how she went from being the fourth-to-last finisher in the 2012 Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run to winning the prestigious ultra the very next year. (!!!) Yet it’s refreshing to hear Pam admit, “there’s gotta be some peer pressure to do burpees.” Pam also tells the tale of how she and her 9-year-old daughter completed a 24-hour race around a 1-mile loop; with plenty... 10/08/2014 Duração: 40min

She’s also a mother runner who knocked 45 minutes off her marathon PR by making a few simple changes to her diet and training so this woman practices what she preaches. According to Cassie, our gut needs to be trained just like muscles and heart do, so she talks about how to be well fueled for a run and how to deal with GI issues during and after a race. Once this podcast hits, we predict a spike in sales of apple sauce. Oh, and find out about Sarah’s new baby. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
