The former Christchurch Recovery Minister has reflected on the decade since the first earthquake. Today marks ten years since the magnitude 7.1 earthquake first struck the region. National deputy leader Gerry Brownlee told Chris Lynch the biggest brake to things happening in Christchurch was Treasury.He says he regrets being so willing to accept some of the advice it gave.Brownlee says they ignored a huge amount of it but they were people from outside Christchurch who had no idea what was going on.Christchurch East MP Poto Williams says Brownlee must take some responsibility for the trouble people had with EQC.Listen above.

L.A.B are playing a special one-off Christchurch show this October 31st at Horncastle Arena. At the end of this month, another four trawlers will join the three already stuck at Lyttelton Port without crew.Fishing companies have been in talks with Government officials since April saying unless they get specialist crew from overseas, the industry could die.The industry says it needs to bring in hundreds of Russian and Ukrainian crew members.Seafood New Zealand CEO Jeremy Helson told Newstalk ZB Christchurch there isn't enough isolation capacity to put through hundreds of crew members for 14 days.But he's offered a solution, saying the industry would happily foot the bill to establish more facilities, as it wouldn't outweigh the devastating losses they'll take if they don't do it.Listen above.

The author whose book convinced many Peter Ellis was innocent says his appeal will leave a huge legacy.Almost exactly a year since Ellis died, the Supreme Court has ruled his appeal can go ahead.Ellis was convicted of sexual offending against children in 1993, but never accepted the charges and twice appealed the convictions.Lynley Hood told Chris Lynch although the Court hasn't released its reasons for the decision tikanga Maori was one argument used to push for it.The debate aired the importance of restoring mana after death.Hood says when she heard a group of kaumatua declared tikanga could apply to Ellis there was a feeling of history being made.

The Peter Ellis appeal will be allowed to proceed, despite his death.The Supreme Court has decided the appeal should continue, almost a year to the day since he died.Ellis was convicted on 16 charges of sexual offending against seven children in 1993.He appealed twice to the Court of Appeal, the second time after a referral by the Governor-General.The first appeal quashed three of his convictions.The second appeal against the remaining 13 convictions was dismissed in 1999.Ellis was granted leave to appeal those remaining convictions in July last year, but died in September.The Supreme Court says the reasons for this decision will be provided at the same time as the decision is released on the substantive appeal.Peter Ellis' long-time lawyer Robert Harrison told Chris Lynch it was a great development in the fight for justice and a chance to restore the reputation of his late client.“I think it’s fantastic news. Concerns about a facial recognition system being set up by police.RNZ is reporting police have been quietly setting up the nine million dollar system that can identify people using a live feed from CCTV cameras.Privacy lawyer Kathryn Dalziel told Chris Lynch she worries there doesn't appear to be any assessment of the impacts on privacy.She says the departments involved are viewing this as upgrades of what they're doing but it's more significant than that.Listen above.

A former convict turned professor is retiring after 30 years as a leading criminologist.Acclaimed University of Canterbury professor Greg Newbold is planning to move to the sunny Bay of Plenty to spend more time diving and fishing.Newbold says told Chris Lynch the crime and justice systems have changed for the better through the course of his career.He says the police have got a lot better too, no more slap on the face or kick up the ass in a dark interrogation room.Listen above.

Canterbury District Health Board member Jo Kane has let loose at ministry officials after a mass exodus of managers.Seven senior executive leaders have quit the 11 person team as the board comes under pressure to cut costs.Kane told Chris Lynch the board has bought into the deficit and can-do-more directives from Wellington.She says officials need to get down here quickly and stop their bullshit rhetoric and bandying around figures that just make them look good.Kane says the board is combative and chairman Sir John Hansen has an autocratic style.

A crowd is gathering outside Christchurch's courthouse, with the beginning of the landmark sentencing of the mosque killer just hours away.There is no doubt 29-year-old Australian national Brenton Tarrant will be sentenced to life imprisonment after pleading guilty to 51 counts of murder, 40 of attempted murder and a charge under the Terrorism Suppression Act, but the major question is whether it is life without parole.That decision falls to Justice Cameron Mander - however, it will likely be several days before he formally passes sentence.Armed police have manned the perimeter of the Christchurch justice precinct since the weekend and road closures have been in effect as authorities gear up for the case.
