On September 22, Yield to the King Ministry will host its 2nd annual fundraising event "Harvest for the Hungry".  Our goal is to heighten awareness that  people who are hungry, homeless and displaced are among us. Scripture says, "He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry....."  Psalm 146:7 (NIV) Our mission is to "mirror the love of Jesus Christ by helping all people in need." So it's obvious we want to raise funds to continue serving those in need through the following outreach programs: meal preparation and feeding; income-qualifying rental assistance; and temporary housing advocacy and placement. But more importantly, we aim to offer wholesome fellowship for communities to come together with a common purpose, goal, and effort. Believe it or not, leadership just doesn't happen!  It takes hard work, grooming, self-examination, humility, coaching, and the willingness to grow self.  The book of Numbers says Joshua had the spirit of leadership. Num. 27:18 (NIV). God prepared him to lead others. Do you wish to be a leader of yourself and others? If so, then you must know yourself. Be honest and ask yourself these questions --Do I resist change or am I a change agent? Do I prefer to work in a silo or do I like to collaborate? Do I forgive easily? Who inspires me? Will I be transformed so I can transform others? "....It is more blessed to give than to receive", according to Apostle Paul, in Acts 20:35, who quoted our Lord, Jesus Christ. Years ago, I did not understand its true meaning. Have you asked yourself this question, "What must I do to keep my brain healthy?" Some may answer exercise, sleep, and live well. Others may insist on eating healthily and include all the brain foods. The human brain is an organ that serves as the central nervous system. It controls the functions of the body. America declared independence from under Great Britain rule with the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. American history tells us we fought, earned, deserved and declared our freedom. In Acts chapter thirteen, Paul and Barnabus were consecrated for the work of the Lord. They were sent away on their first missionary journey to Paphos of Cyprus. They preached to the men of Israel and were met with fierce opposition. The Jews were jealous that the word of God was being preached to the Gentiles. In Acts 13:52 it says, "And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit." Just think how discouraged and distracted they could have been if they did not choose joy during adversity. Everything we have and own is a gift from God. He has made us overseers and expects us to be good stewards not only over our finances, but also our resources, time, and talents.  Believe it or not there are biblical principles for financial stewardship. God has made us a promise, "I will never leave nor forsake you." Where then is God when we need Him most? Why does it feel like we are walking alone through difficult times? We serve a mighty God, the Creator of the heavens and the earth. God is everywhere. He is not bound by space or time. Life and death are in His hands. He sees and knows all things. Mother's Day is upon us, a time to celebrate mothers, grandmothers, God-mothers, foster mothers, adoptive mothers, and the like. I'm a little saddened around this time and struggle with how to celebrate Mother's Day.  Why? Because my mother died May 11, 2016, and the last Mother's Day we celebrated with her was May 8, 2016. My four sisters and I thanked God that we were able to honor and celebrate her one last time while she was still here on earth!  And, we especially thank Him today for the mother He gave us! When I think about her, the passages in Proverbs 31:10-31, often called the Virtuous Womanor The Wife of Noble Character,come to mind. My mother truly was of good character; clothed with dignity and strength; spoke with wisdom; watched over the affairs of her house; and her children "Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate." I remember learning "Jesus Loves Me", a children's hymn in Sunday school at the age of five or six.  At that early age I could not comprehend the magnitude of Jesus' love. Today however, I can affirm His love for me because of my relationship with Him and because the Bible tells me so.  The Bible is full of verses, content, and context proclaiming applicable truths to the song “Jesus Loves Me.” This leads to the question, how should we respond to this powerful hymn? And, will we let the Bible tell us so? The truth of Christ’s love is simple to say or sing, yet difficult to believe. It takes faith --a saving faith provided by God. The term “love” evokes a relationship, intimacy, commitment, and devotion. The Bible says in Genesis 1:27, "God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." (NKJV) Those passages are significant, if you believe in the creation. What about the desires of people who want to find out more about their genetic makeup and ancestry? Most have resorted to deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) testing. DNA is an abbreviation for the very thing that makes us who we are. I personally know of individuals who are interested in learning more about their family of origin. They want answers to such questions as, from what countries did my ancestors come? What is my ancestry dominant race? Who are my distant relatives? I have family members and friends who have submitted their home testing kit to receive their results and now they know more than they knew before. Isn't knowing God as creator of all things enough? Today, we have access to so much information. We are informed through electronic means, print media, radio broadcasts, and interviews, just to name a few.  Nowadays, WHO determines what is a good source of information? WHAT verfication process is used for information that is being disseminated? WHY do so many of us automatically entertain what we read or hear? From WHERE does this information come? WHEN do we decipher if this information is accurate or not? And ultimately, HOW will this information effect our lives? God's truth is based on fact – it is recorded and verifiable. The world's truth is based on a perspective that is governed by a different set of principles. Can we trust its source? There are many faith traditions and practices around Ash Wednesday. And you may ask, “Why is it important?” Short answer, because it starts off the Holy Season of Lent with meaning, purpose and reflection. This year 2018, Ash Wednesday is February 14 and the Lenten Season lasts through March 31. The Season lasts 40 days (not counting Sundays), representing the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness before starting His ministry. Our focus during this Season should be a time of repentance, renewal, and motivation to reach a new level of experiencing God’s grace. Our lives should increase the desire of others to know Christ as Lord and Savior.  One way people can learn of Jesus is by our testimony and witness.  No, we've not seen Him with our naked eye, but if we're in relationship with Him, we have experienced His love, mercy, and grace.  Isaiah 43:12 says, "I have revealed and saved and proclaimed— I, and not some foreign god among you. You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, “that I am God."  We are His witnesses when we live with focus and purpose or even if we flounder like a fish fresh out of water. Can you count the times throughout the day when you really feel hungry? I would say for me maybe two to three times per day my stomach feels empty, but of course it depends on what type of meal I ate last. Years ago in the name of being proactive, I used to eat before feeling hunger pangs. Now with maturity and being more conscientious about my overall health, I've learned to eat smaller portions and leave room for a small snack later. Have you ever felt really hungry for the Word of God and your hunger pangs are insatiable? Do we approach the Word of God as our daily bread or do we just snack every now and again? The Word should be equally important to us as the food we eat to nourish our physical bodies. Happy New Year!  The year 2018 is here and we cannot turn back the hands of time.
