The Real Reason to Avoid Debt #308
20/01/2021 Duração: 33minJust a few years before he died, author David Foster Wallace gave a now-famous commencement speech at Kenyon College. Here’s a small snippet of what he said. “There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says ‘Morning, boys. How's the water?’ And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes ‘What the hell is water?’” Wallace then went on to argue that we tend to live our lives according to values and rules that are hard to see. Similarly, we live in a culture that pushes us to go into debt for everything! It’s the message we are constantly bombarded with - it’s the water we swim in. So on today’s episode we’re going to push back on that line of thought and give the real reasons we should all be striving to avoid debt.During this episode we both enjoyed a EMO-J by Heist Brewery in Charlotte NC. And as we’ve kicked things off with a bang in 2021, we could really use your

Big Money Moves You’re Probably Overlooking #305
13/01/2021 Duração: 35minWhen we need to make some serious changes to our personal finances, the small tweaks and changes aren’t going to cut it. Instead, we need to take a look at some of the bigger money moves that will allow us to drastically save and invest more of our money. And often, this isn’t an instinctual response. For many reasons we tend to immediately focus on and get bogged down with the little stuff- it’s the small money moves that often get much of the attention. For example how often do we hear about cutting out a latte or the proverbial avocado toast. But while it is certainly easier to forego a to-go coffee than to look at the bigger money levers in our life, those changes are also going to have a far smaller impact. It’s time to focus on the big stuff!During this episode we both enjoyed a Holmberg Bound by Four Peaks Brewing- thanks to Jacob for donating these beers to the show!
