As we continue to study the book of Isaiah, it is now necessary to do so in light of the word that has been recently spoken over this Conference. As there is a shift that must take place within our hearts to fully live up to the evangelistic mandate Jesus has given us, that same shift can be observed in the lives of God's servants throughout scripture. That shift speaks not just to a change in our feelings, but also an adjustment in our attitude about ministry, away from an emphasis on a words-based theology of ministry toward a works-based theology. As we move into our Pentecost season, it is necessary to examine the shifting experiences of Isaiah and of the upper room attendees on the day of Pentecost. Lessons from these experiences will help us connect the messages of the Old and New Testaments, which will empower us for greater works in ministry.

God has poured out His anointing over the Canadian Conference of the AME Church, and it's time for us to function in that anointing and do the things we must do to grow. It's time to SHIFT! Traditions offer us a blueprint, provide direction, and are a major source of pride for generations of those upholding them. The problem with traditions, however, especially from a faith standpoint, is that because they are passed down through the generations, they are often followed without background knowledge or theological significance, which can produce an entire culture of deceived individuals, having no clue of why they do what they do. Such is the case with the Easter tradition, which has absolutely nothing to do with Jesus, even though it's been purported and celebrated as such for years. It's all about the resurrection, not Easter!

In our traditional, celebratory waving of palms on Palm Sunday, we easily forget this should also be a day of great reflection, as we begin Passion Week. Jesus is calling us to a greater level of intimacy with Him that will dramatically reform our prayer lives, and an examination of the true meaning of the word "Hosanna," both an exclamation of praise and cry of great need, demonstrates this.

Every rapper talks about it; every talent evaluator looks for it; every situation calls for it. It seems, however, that the world has more of it than the kingdom, and that ought not be the case. Salvation doesn't demand we change our personality; rather, it demands we merely use that personality for good, instead of evil. As Christians, we have a blueprint--the Bible--for what having swagger is all about, as Jesus and His disciples did so many audacious things that we can't help but to have a little bit of swagger! Be proud to rep the King; our faith demands it.

Regardless of background or economic status, the majority of us spend a great deal of energy trying to get the hookup. We all want as many deals, discounts, and inside tracks as possible to enhance our lives and make them easier, but when it comes to this Christian life, we just can't do that. We can't go through life on the hookup because there's no substitute for holiness. What we can do, however, is get hooked up to the power source that is Christ Jesus, and once we do that, we will see just how limited the hookup we're used to really is.

We have already witnessed how the story of Jesus extends beyond the gospels, appearing, either implicitly or explicitly, throughout the entire Bible. After surveying all of scripture to discover how foundational doctrines and concepts connect the story of Christ in both testaments, specific books must be explored to further enhance the understanding of that story. Isaiah is the perfect text to begin that exploration because within it contains a microcosm of both human life and the complete biblical text. A thorough examination of this most-important prophetic book will yield a keen understanding of not only God's plan for humanity revealed in the person of Christ, but also of the times we are living in today and of how we as Christians are to respond to those times. Isaiah's prophecy has been a very multifaceted one up to this point, as God has approached the idea of judgment in three of the first four chapters from many different angles. God has ordained the family and the bond therein to help its members reach their full potential in God, not deter them from their goals. Though so many forces seek to separate us, it is God's will that we remain unified and strong, and, as Jesus said, "that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you." Only TOGETHER will we reach our God-given destiny!

We pray. We fast. We read our Bibles. We do these and other things known as spiritual disciplines, actions fundamental to our Christian growth and development, but we forget about one key discipline, that of celebration, which can bind all the others together. Sometimes, we allow trials, as well as our times of falling short in those trials, to make us forget that we do have things to celebrate God for. No matter what our station in life, if we take some time to celebrate the Lord for His goodness in our lives, no matter how hard that might be, we'll find the strength to continue the journey.

Isaiah 2-4 continue much in the same vein as Chapter 1, as they contain similar stern warnings from the Lord to the people of Judah. God has high expectations for His chosen people, but again, their arrogance has caused them not to live

Comparing our lives to others, especially very prosperous non-believers, can be very discouraging if our spirits aren't strong and our self-image not clearly rooted in Christ. Just as the psalmist Asaph experienced, the only way we can encourage ourselves is by drawing nearer to God and asking for His guidance to help us focus on our own lives, both presently and eternally, rather than on the here-and-now in other's lives. Very simply, our mandate for personal success against the enemy of comparison is this: "Do you, boo!"

At the moment of our Lord and Savior's greatest vulnerability, Jesus demonstrated the epitome of a championship mentality in almost instantaneously maturing from fear to acceptance of His great call to suffer crucifixion for our sins. Jesus showed the heart of a champion by mustering up the courage to face his fate, rather than letting His fears deter Him from destiny. Much in the same way, if we make it up in our minds that we are champions in Christ Jesus, no amount of trial or temptation will disrupt the plan of God in our lives. You are a champion!

The truth is the truth, regardless of who speaks it, where it comes from, and when it's given. It's too bad the people of Nazareth didn't understand this important fact when Jesus announced the beginning of his earthly ministry. Jesus was poised to do great works in his hometown, but the people's preconceived notions about Who Jesus was, based on their familiarity with Him as a child, prevented them from receiving the blessing He had for them. Isn't it the same with us at times? What stands in the way, either internally or externally, of our hearing and acting on the truth we hear?
