Today's information, whether it be via print/social media or news broadcasts, is dismal at best. Yet, most of us are compelled to keep up in order to remain current. One day you may hear something and within the hour it has changed. Realistically, how much information can we really take in, retain, and apply?  And at the end of the day, how is it all affecting you, me, and our circle of family and friends? Psalm 24:1-2 says, "The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it on the seas and established it on the waters." (NIV)  God who is the Great I AM, the All-knowing One, can keep up with it all. I certainly cannot! A native of Seattle, Vida Oliphant Sneed is the youngest of the five girls born to parents Clarence A. Oliphant and La Verna D. Jones Oliphant, both originally from Iowa. While growing up, Vida discovered these two truths: we all are created with a particular “bent” and our life’s assignment is to learn how to submit that “bent” to the Master’s hand.  Based on Deuteronomy 6:5-9, Vida did submit and began her life-rewarding homeschool journey. Vida graduated from high school at age 16 and attended the University of Washington for two years before transferring to University of Southern California where she graduated with a BA in English. She returned to Seattle to marry the love of her life, Steve Sneed and God blessed them with six children. Vida received her Elementary Education Teaching Certificate and taught in the Seattle Public Schools for a very short time. The Lord redirected her course to homeschooling her then three children. Christian disciplines are vital to our spiritual growth. It's difficult to navigate life without the application of God’s Word. When we read the Bible we are feeding ourselves with spiritual food to help us through the days, weeks, months, and years to come. Bible intake is necessary. There are other disciplines such as prayer, fasting, worship, serving, and giving, that enriches our lives and equips us to live victoriously. II Timothy 3:16-17 says, "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." Daily, our national affairs reveal the root problem of a wicked heart. Hatred, prejudice, and racism, just to name a few symptoms, are deeply rooted in the history of America. The most recent police shootings and killings are causing people to rise up and say, "Enough is enough!"  The wicked heart is a condition that only God can remedy. It is God alone who can give us a new heart and put a new spirit within us. He has to remove the heart of stone and give us a heart of flesh. The state of our nation is best described in Isaiah chapter 1:4, "Woe to the sinful nation, a people whose guilt is great, a brood of evildoers, children given to corruption! They have forsaken the Lord; they have spurned the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on him." Wherever God has called us, we need to walk in boldness and confidence in Christ Jesus, because God has equipped us. He may send us down into the valley in order to make our ascent up to the mountain top.  Along this journey, who will be our companions – the naysayers or the praisers?  Daily, we are being prepared by our Heavenly Father to get to high places. We will make our ascent, if we just trust God.   Habakkuk 3:19 says, "The Lord God is my strength, and He has made my feet like hinds’ feet, and makes me walk on my high places. The promise is we are given hinds feet that are swift, firm and steady. And, God will always give us the ability, by His strength, to live victoriously. We talk to people all the time --in-person, over the phone, or through various communication and video apps. When we engage in conversation with others, we share what's on our hearts. It's a comfort to have a listening ear. Hopefully, everyone has a confidant who fullfils that role. What happens when the role is shifted? Do we listen and become self-involved? Do we listen and disregard the other person's feelings? Or, do we always listen waiting for the opportunity to give an answer? Proverbs 1:5-6 says, "let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance—for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise." (NIV) We like to have a listening ear. However, oftentimes it's difficult for us to respond to that very need of someone and do the same. Over the past couple of months, I've been praying more than ever before. "Why?" I asked myself. All I could come up with are these two words "uncertainty"and "unknown" that best describe my feelings. And yes, it has everything to do with COVID-19! As for the word uncertainty –well who knows exactly what is going to happen next? And, as for the word unknown --well who can predict the outcome of our overall health, wealth, and security? The only response I have to offer is God is sovereign and I trust Him! Discipline for the Christian is a must! Think of it this way, we need "spritiual disciplines for the Christian life." I didn't think up this phrase. It's actually the title of a book in my library. The authors are Donald S. Whitney and the forward is by J. I. Packer, two writers with whom we are very familiar. The word "discipline" can carry a negative connotation and brings to mind punishment. While growing up, I was diciplined by my parents. Even today, I am still being disciplined by my Heavenly Father to whom I belong. Hebrews 12:11 (NIV) says, "No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it."  Discipline also means teach, coach, and drill. Those words shed light on what we must consider doing to grow in godliness. Apologetics is a big word.  It basically means to offer an apology.  So you might ask, why are we apologizing for our belief in Christ Jesus?  In answer to that question -- we're not!  Apologetics is developing and using a defense or being able to give an explanation to others. God's Word is always under attack, both unintentionally and intentionally.  And, as believers in Christ, we claim the Bible is the absolute authoritative guide in our lives. How then, do we defend our faith? The Bible? Here in the United States of America we have the United States Constitution that starts out with "We the people" and goes on to establish national government and fundamental laws and guarantees certain basic rights for its citizens. The Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787. Also, in America, we have a national flag --a symbol to which Americans publicly pledge our allegiance to the United States of America. This flag represents privilege and freedom to all citizens! To whom and what do we pledge our allegiance? Is nationality (belonging to a certain country) above the case and cause of Jesus Christ?  We are ambassadors for Christ, promoting His gospel of salvation for all who believe. The Apostle Paul said it well, "We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. Sometimes I wish I had a huge magnifying glass to see what I'm missing. The purpose of a magnifying glass is to enlarge that which appears small or seems to be unclear to the naked eye. In other words, it improves our vision! The question for the day is "How can we improve our vision of God the Father so we can see Him in the midst of our daily living activities?" The Book of Romans, 1:20, says, "For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse...…"(NIV)  With the Holy Spirit's help, we can see God's hands in all things, feel His almighty power, and experience His steadfast love. The baby Jesus was born in the manger, but the Christmas story does not end there. God the Father sent His Son called Emmanuel, into this world in fleshly form. He dwelt among us. This event is the beginning of an eternal story. In Matthew 1:23, it says, “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Emmanuel” (which means “God with us”). The rest of the story is Jesus was crucified, buried, resurrected from the dead, and He will return again. Christ died for us so that we can be in a restored relationship with God the Father. We all have something to say and most of the time we will have an audience who is willing to listen. People enjoy engaging in an interesting conversation or having a thought-provoking discussion sprinkled with differing opinions. After all, we all don't think alike and not all may agree. What happens when someone has to be right and the other person is wrong? Some may even resort to spewing disparaging remarks, name calling, and finger pointing. I know for me, I have felt very uncomfortable and find a way to bow out of that discussion. Our words should be wholesome, edifying, and pleasing to God. Proverbs 16:24 says, "Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, Sweetness to the soul and health to the bones." (NKJV)  What are you talking about these days? Who is listening? God intends to bless us richly with every good and perfect gift that comes from above. His blessings are wrapped in unconditional love, matchless grace, and salvation. Deuteronomy 28:2-3 says, “And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God: Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the country." In James 1:17, it says, "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." (NIV). We don't have to search high and low to see how Jesus takes care of us and shows us that He is with us.  All we have to do is pay close attention and see the littlest things as gifts from above.
